XXL Magazine Spring 2019 Dreamville

J. Cole has been building his Dreamville Records for the past 12 years, launching the label in 2007. Now cole and the entire Dreamville roster—Bas, Cozz, EarthGang, J. I. D, lute, omen and ari lennox—grace the cover of XXL magazine's spring 2019 issue. The dreamville crew took a break from rap camp at atlanta's Tree Sound Studios in January, to squad up for the cover, where they were recording songs for the Revenge of the Dreamers III compilation, shot by photographer Jonathan Mannion.

This year's freshman class includes 11 artists: East Saint Louis, Ill.

S comethazine, compton's roddy ricch, suitland, Philadelphia's Tierra Whack, Charlotte, North Carolina's DaBaby, Seattle's Lil Mosey, Md. S ybn cordae, Jacksonville, Fla. S yk osiris, Largo, Md. S rico nasty, atlanta's gunna, houston's Megan Thee Stallion and the 10th Spot winner, Los Angeles' Blueface. Thanks to the internet, the hip-hop fans, social media and, more importantly, XXL Freshman has increased in popularity year after year.

Then we argue it out as a staff and narrow down the list. Now in its 12th year, the xxl freshman franchise has consistently embraced hip-hop's rising stars and helped push them to the forefront of the culture. The wait is officially over. The decision on which artists enter the XXL Freshman Class comes together the same way as when it first started.

In addition to the 2019 freshman class, hip-hop junkie conversation with pop star billie eilish, blac youngsta, the xxl magazine summer 2019 issue also includes a look back at last year's Freshmen, a compelling narrative on whether Jay-Z should consider running for president, in memoriam honors for XXXTentacion, Ugly God, Nipsey Hussle and Mac Miller from their fellow Freshman classmates, the history of the letter X in hip-hop, interviews with Lil Bibby, Lil Yachty, Freddie Gibbs and more.

A critically acclaimed classic, the autobiography of Gucci Mane “provides incredible insight into one of the most influential rappers of the last decade, detailing a volatile and fascinating life. By the end, every reader will have a greater understanding of Gucci Mane, the man and the musician” Pitchfork.
